Yahoo #1 Web Property Again In US, First Time Since Early 2008

Here’s hoping Marissa Mayer and Co. have a bottle of champagne at the ready, because there’s something to celebrate over at Yahoo’s headquarters today.

For the first time in more than two years, Yahoo topped Google as the No. 1 Web property in the U.S., according to new data from comScore. During the month of July, Yahoo sites attracted 196,564 unique visitors, while sites owned by Google drew in 192,251.

The last time Yahoo ranked No. 1 was back in May 2011, a comScore spokeswoman told PCMag.com. The company has consistently ranked as No. 2 or 3, but hasn’t regained the top spot until now.

So what exactly propelled Yahoo to the top last month? If you think the rise is related to the company’s recent acquisition of tumblr, think again.

“Tumblr is not included in the Yahoo sites roll-up,” the comScore spokeswoman said. In fact, Tumblr itself ranked as the 28th most popular U.S. Web property in July.

In reality, Yahoo and Google have been neck and neck for a while, “so the change in rank was likely due to normal seasonal/month-to-month variation.”

Yahoo has seemingly been on the upswing since Mayer, a former Google executive, took the helm of the struggling web companing in  july 2012. Since coming on board, Mayer has launched a major overhaul effort, unveiling a new homepage, updating Yahoo Mail, and releasing the Flickr-enhanced weather app. The company has also been on an acquisition spree as of late, picking up Tumblr and the news app summly, among others.

Revenue for the second quarter came in at $1.07 billion, a 1 percent decrease from the same time period last year, though earnings landed at $335 million, up from $228 million in 2012.
